Khaliji and Emirati Hijab Styles: How to Get the Gulf Look

The Khaliji look is one of the most recognisable and elegant styles in modest fashion. Rooted in the Gulf and worn across the UAE, it is defined by volume at the crown, a softly draped sheila, and a palette that leans neutral and refined. Here is what sets it apart and how to wear it.

What makes a look “Khaliji”

Khaliji styling favours a raised, rounded silhouette at the top of the head, a long rectangular sheila draped loosely rather than pinned tight, and an emphasis on fabric that flows. The colour story is usually understated: black, beige, nude, grey and soft earth tones, with richer colour saved for occasions. It reads as effortless, but the shape is deliberate.

The pieces you need

Three things carry the look: a volumising base such as a turban cap or padded under-scarf, a long, fluid sheila in chiffon, modal or georgette, and a couple of good pins to hold the drape without crushing the volume.

How to drape a Khaliji sheila, step by step

  1. Start with your volumising cap in place, adding a little height at the crown.
  2. Lay the sheila so one side is short and the other long, with the shorter side at your preferred shoulder.
  3. Take the long side up and across the crown, keeping the fabric soft and slightly raised rather than flat.
  4. Drape it back down over the opposite shoulder, letting it fall loosely.
  5. Pin discreetly at the side of the head to hold the shape, and adjust the front so it frames the face gently.

Fabric and climate

For daily wear in the UAE, modal and lightweight chiffon give the fluid drape the look depends on while still breathing in the heat. Save heavier or embellished sheilas for occasions and weddings, where a little shimmer and structure suit the setting.

Making it your own

The Khaliji look is a template, not a uniform. Keep the volume and the soft drape, then adjust the colour and fabric to your day. A neutral modal sheila for work, a richer emerald or maroon chiffon for an evening, and a gold-toned drape for celebrations will carry you through most of the calendar.
