How to Crochet a Scarf: A Simple Pattern for Beginners

Crochet is one of the most beginner-friendly crafts, and a scarf is the perfect first project: a simple rectangle worked in one repeating stitch. If you have never held a hook, here is how to crochet a scarf from scratch.

What you need

  • Yarn: one to three balls of medium (worsted/aran) weight yarn, in a soft wool or acrylic blend.
  • A crochet hook to match, usually 5 mm to 6 mm for this weight (check the yarn label).
  • Scissors and a darning needle to weave in the ends.

Pick a colour you would genuinely wear, so the finished scarf becomes part of your wardrobe.

Step 1: Slip knot and chain

Start with a slip knot on the hook, then make a foundation chain. For a scarf about 20 cm wide in worsted yarn, chain around 25 to 30 stitches. Keep the chain relaxed, not tight, so the first row is easy to work into.

Step 2: Learn double crochet

The double crochet stitch (US terms) builds a soft, slightly open fabric that is ideal for scarves and quick to work. Yarn over, insert the hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops twice. Repeat across the row. Do not worry if the first rows look uneven; tension settles as you go.

Step 3: Work row after row

At the end of each row, chain two or three and turn, then work back across. Keep going until the scarf reaches about 150 to 170 cm, or as long as you like. This is the relaxing, repetitive part, and a great one to do in front of a screen.

Step 4: Fasten off and finish

When it is long enough, fasten off by cutting the yarn and pulling it through the last loop to lock it. Weave the loose ends back into the fabric with your darning needle so nothing unravels. Add a fringe if you like by knotting short lengths of yarn along each end.

Tips for a better first scarf

  • A chunky yarn and larger hook work up faster, which keeps beginners going.
  • Count your stitches every few rows so the edges stay straight.
  • Block the finished scarf (dampen, pat to shape, let dry) to even out the stitches.
